#11323 1/4 Daguerreotype, young girl standing on a chair by PORTER, CINCINNATI
Quarter plate (3.25" by 4.25") daguerreotype a very cute young girl standing on a chair; there is light bluish tint to her dress/skirt. The mat identifies this image as being taken at “PORTER’S ART PALACE CIN.O.”. William S. Porter is somewhat famous for taking an 8 plate panorama view of the Cincinnati waterfront along with his partner of the time Charles Fontayne in 1848. This wonderful “Cincinnati Riverfront Panorama” is on permanent display at the Library of Cincinnati. I have seen this exhibit and I encourage anyone who visits Cincinnati to check it out. The plate has a rare hallmark, referenced in Floyd & Marion Rinhart’s “The American Daguerreotype” as #12 (E.S.&Co.). Housed in a nice but worn full case with an original spine.
CONDITION: the re-silvered plate is in excellent condition with a ring of tarnish as seen. I have resealed the plate with a new glass and Filmoplast P90. (NOTE: re-silvered refers to a process done by the daguerreotypist to add an extra layer of silver to the plate before buffing and the image exposed. This is generally believed to have been done to achieve a superior plate surface, hence a better quality daguerreotype.)
