#11248 1/6 Daguerreotype, young child in tinted red gown & dog figurine
Sixth plate (2.75" by 3.25") daguerreotype of a young child wearing a tinted red or faded red gown or christening dress(?). A large Staffordshire dog is placed on the table next to the child. I have received information from Adele Kenny, author of Staffordshire Spaniels, that the figurine “is most definitely a Staffordshire Spaniel. Such figures were widely purchased among the rising middle class during the Victorian Era -- not fine porcelain such as Derby or Bow, but affordable ‘trinkets’ that helped polish the middle class veneer of prosperity”. Housed in a nice full case that is missing one closing clasp, professional leather spine repair.
CONDITION: the plate is in very good condition with slight tarnish, some very small abrasions on the left mat edge and a couple of teeny spots as seen. When viewing with a strong light and the image is in the “negative” several tiny crimps can be seen. I have replaced the glass and sealed the package with Filmoplast P90 and archival polyester film.
